Canada Immigration
Although Jacques Cartier reached eastern shores of Canada via St. Lawrence gulf and eventually reached Quebec in 1535. However, the actual settlement and immigration to Canada started almost two centirues ago after British and French colonization. There were four major waves of Canada immigration and fifth one is going now.
The current wave of immigration for Canada started since 1970. There has been an overwhelming migration mostly from South Asia and China accounting to 225,000-275,000 annual immigrants.
There are mainly three categories of immigration to Canada:
- 1. Economic immigrants
- 2. Famiy class
- 3. Refugees
As per Canadian nationality law, an immigrant living as a permanent resident in Canada for 1095 days in any 4 year period can apply for Canadian citizenship.
